We've had the best day with our friends Pauline and Rob from Australia! We are so happy they made us part of their trip to America! Pauline is an Australian demonstrator I met online about 2 years ago and we became friends instantly.
They stopped in Las Vegas and got married...so of course I had Benjamin make them a wedding cake. It was a fun surprise! She knew all about his cakes and has followed his journey and said the most awesome things to him about being honored to have one of them .
It's an acquired taste. Toast, lots of butter and a scrape, just a very minute scrape of Vegemite. You have to get the proportions right until you acquire the taste. Then you can almost eat it from the jar - well not really. It's not peanut paste.
ReplyDeleteLovely cake, well done.
Love it!!! Not Vegimite, have not tasted it, but the look on your face and your comment! You gave me my daily chuckle! YOur son is VERY talented!
ReplyDeleteJust love the face. But then I love vegemite(and yes I am an Aussie) fresh crusty bread, butter and just a scrape of vegemite. It is an aquired taste for sure. Great looking cake wonderful job.
ReplyDeleteThe cake is wonderful, you son is so talented, just like his mum. Here in the UK we have adverts for Marmite which say love it or hate it Vegemite is the same. I hate it my son loves it. Hugs Bee
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cake, Benjamin!
ReplyDeleteSo funny ~ and your sons cake is amazing!!! love your blog and creativity Becky ~ been following (stalking) you for quite some time now and you inspired me so much ~ TFS!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Pauline & Rob
ReplyDeleteWow I bet they were thrilled with your sons wedding cake its totally amazing.
What a talented boy Ben is !!
As to vegimite; here in the UK we have mimite which is more or less the same, and they say "You either love it or hate it" personally I love it and its calorie free !!
I'd still rather have a slice of Bens fab cake though !! he he
Hugs Susie Sugar xx
What a beautiful cake!!! Your son will give "Cake Boss" a run for his money!
ReplyDeleteI can not believe how beautiful Benjamin's cake's are...he is one talented guy...good job!
ReplyDeletecome on mate....skim of vegemite and toast with butter :)
ReplyDeletegood day!
Wow! Becky. You tell Ben he did a beautiful job. I always enjoy seeing his creations. Hope to meet you at convention! Eeekkkkk!!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you told us all how bad it is. I have heard of it but have never tried eat. Your son is very talented. My Mother-in-law has been a cake decorator since she was about 17. She work for our local bakery for years and now she has her own business. She loves it! Baking is so much fun and now a days you can be so creative with it. I hope your son continues on with it!!
ReplyDeleteScrape some on bread with butter and some really crisp lettuce leaves. ... Or even better - toast, butter, vegemite and a fried egg. Mmmmmm from another Aussie reader!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the cake!!! He is awesome! Great photo's and story Becky.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh that cake is gorgeous. I saw the Wizard of Oz one too!
ReplyDeleteHow did he get started? My little girl took a class at 11 but oh my gosh he is great.
DOES HE HAVE HIS OWN BLOG? IF SO, I WOULD LOVE TO FOLLOW IT, IF NOT HE NEEDS ONE!!
Love the photos of your face when taking a bite of that Vegemite!
OMG... Benjamin's cake decorating skills are AMAZING! Where/how did he learn this?
ReplyDeleteYour blog is one of my first stops every morning. I so look forward to what you're up to and so enjoy the glimpses into your "other" life (other than cards, lol). Your expression is priceless in these photos. You're a beautiful lady. Thanks for sharing!
~Shelley (from Ontario, Canada)
That cake is so amazing! I could never make anything that beautiful, mine are lopsided and caving in, lol. Like the face when you tried Vegemite, lol. sounds like you had a great day.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have nothing original to say about that awesome cake. I just wish we lived closer so I could have had him make MY wedding cake. He's a real pro, and I don't care what anyone has to say about his age being too young to be one (no one HERE has ever said that I'm sure). He's the Ace of Cakes, isn't he? How fun to share in the foods. I'm sure she is used to people turning down the Vegemite, LOL
ReplyDeleteHow amazing, I bet you guys had a ball!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chuckle this morning! Your face is priceless. Ben did an awesome job on the cake!
ReplyDeleteI learned to decorate cakes when I was in my 20's and decorated many wedding cakes in my time. Your son, at age 15, makes beautiful and professional looking cakes. He is a very talented cake decorater and should be very proud of himself!!! He might consider starting a small business selling decorated cakes.
ReplyDeleteGood on yah for trying the (in)famous Vegemite! DEFINITELY an acquired taste!
ReplyDeleteWish to taste Benjamin's cake, too... He is wonderful..
ReplyDeleteYou do not need to add Benjamin's age, his cakes are beautiful no matter how old he is. Please post more, he is pretty darn talented! And what a sweet gesture to make the cake.
ReplyDeleteBenjamin's cakes are beautiful. there surely has to be some food network show that he can try out for! (maybe he needs to send an email to Duff and be a special guest).
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to make friends online from so far away, then to meet them in person and welcome them into your home. The cake is AMAZING...your son has a stellar future with this kind of talent. Happy times!
ReplyDeleteI hate Vegemite too!! Hubby loves it so I make him brush his teeth after!!
ReplyDeleteYour son's cake looks so elegant, bet it tasted great too!!
What a great visit you must of had! SU friends are so very dear. Congratulations of the Marriage of your friends. May they live long and happy lives together! I am still so impressed with your sons cakes!!!! He definitely has a talent for it. Has he chosen a name for his TV Program yet (Smile)
ReplyDeleteI trust your taste buds for the Veggie stuff OMG!
How can you possibly not like Vegemite! We aussies were brought up on it! I love the wedding cake, you have a very talented son. I can't even begin to imagine what creations he will come up with as he gets older. I am sure one day I am going to see him on pay TV with his own show!
ReplyDeleteHe He I just had to laugh this morning us Kiwis & Ausies have been bought up on vegimite/marmite, there is always a debate as to which is best. Try it with some butter first then a small!!! amount of vegimite then some tomato slices with salt and pepper Yum Yum or even some avocado! I'm sure you guys have some things we would cringe at too;)
ReplyDeletePS: Wow to the cake, great job. Off to show it to my almost 14yr old to see what she can come up with.
I've been WAITING for these pictures!! How fun to see Pauline and new hubby! I'm laughing at the trade, wedding cake verses veggie thingies? LOL That is funny! BTW Ben did an AWESOME JOB ON THE CAKE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOWOW!
ReplyDeleteSEE you SOON!!
What a gorgeous cake! What a fun visit!!
ReplyDeleteBenjamin - Your are Fifteen and Fabulous! Everything I've seen of yours is wodnerful ... you have an incredible talent. Becky, i agree. Vegimite sucks! How very kind of you to have a little reception for your friends from down under! Congrats to them. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat cake and congrats to pauline and her new husband! As a fellow aussie I just need to say that to be aussie you have been brought up on vegemite...in nearly all cases it's one of the first foods we eat ...either on a sandwich or on toast... Now it's never far and there is always a jar where ever we and my vegemite kids (2 boys) go!...good luck in your new adventure pauline!
ReplyDeleteYour son is very talented- maybe one day I will watch him on Food Network. :0)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely experience to share and meet with your Aussie friend. I do not like Vegemite, and your face after tasting it made me laugh!
Love your blog! Thanks for sharing your creativity!
Firstly great job on the cake Benjamin - what a great piece of art you created!!
ReplyDeleteNow Becky you gotta love Vegemite (yep I'm an Aussie too) but only put a thin smear... nothing like fresh bread & vegemite or on hot toast. If you put too much on it's just too strong....lol
Congratulations to Pauline too! Wow what a wonderful place to get married, I loved Vegas when I visited there about 6yrs ago (I think)
Had to laugh at your face! As all the other Aussie's have said, you have to use Vegemite in small quantities, do that and you'll love it (but going by your face you may not be game to try it again:) Oh and the cake was awesome -great job Ben.
ReplyDeleteWow, your son is better than professional. Elegant cake. What is vegemite? Even sounds icky, like something I Love Lucy would try to sell. I will be in Boise the last weekend of August. Hope to be able to meet you.
ReplyDeleteAwesome cake :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Your Son did a Great Job. My Son is nearly 15 Years old, but he will only eat cakes. Yummy
ReplyDeletevlg Ute
Oh I can't live a day without vegemite!! You know it is full of vitamin B and essential before a late night stampin, smeared lightly over the freshest bread in the house....hhhmmmmm....yummo!! But your son's cake is just amazing....that kind of talent will get him places....
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful job your son did on the wedding cake. I'll bet you enjoyed the taste better than the Vegemite by the look on your face.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I've tried it too - blech! And I was sooo excited to try it too, lol! Oh well. So nice that you got to meet an online friend though!!!
ReplyDeleteAs Shirley and all the other Aussies says (re vegimite), you just need a scrape!! I'm an Aussie girl in my 40's and only started eating it months ago, its an acquired taste. It also goes well with avocado on your toast!!! I know, sounds strange, but there you go. Don't give up on it just yet. PS love your work!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome cake that your son baked. So professional! He has alot of talent!
ReplyDeleteBecky, Rob and I had an wonderful time with you and your family. Thank you so much. Ben you are a star I loved the cake so much not only did it look fantastic it was YUMMY! You made my day! Thanks again Ben! Thank you also to all the wonderful people on becky's blog that sent well wishes to Rob and I. Hope you are having a great time at convention Becky!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove Pauline!
Oh Becky, there is nothing better than Vegemite toast!!! Especially when pregnant! hmmm...it probably is an Aussie thing though! We're bred to eat it!!
ReplyDeleteFirst I must say your son's wedding cake is simply gorgeous. And that he is only 15 is amazing...such talent.
ReplyDeleteWell my grandmother is from England and her sister and brother spent the majority of their lives in Australia. Grandmother came to the US in the mid 20's but never cared for our food, so she made sure we always ate what was served at home. Her sister and brother came for a month and brought lots of goodies and one of them was Vegemite.
My uncle made sure it was served the "proper" way for breakfast on a nice slice of hearty toast, buttered, a smudge of Vegemite, tomato and fried egg and of course tea. I can't say I loved it at first but the taste grew on me and now I serve it to my children and grandchildren.
Oh how funny! I love the look on your face Bec and I must say I agree with you. I have lived in Australia for 16 years and never aquired the taste for vegemite. I really love that cake and agree with everyone else that Ben is a star and a really talented sugar artist. Lots of inky hugs from Charmaine ;-)
ReplyDeleteBecky - your son's cake is amazing! What talent for someone so young!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great time! Our friends sent us some Vegemite and we had the same look on our faces when we tried it! YUK. Oh the cake looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI used to be a cake decorator and your son is AWESOME at it!! He needs to open his own business some day for sure! Fresh crusty bread, butter and vegemite and cheese - YUM another Aussie here. Marmite is a bit sweeter than vegemite - that's the difference, vegemite is more saltier:)
