Happy Easter

This year Greek Orthodox Easter falls on the same Sunday as Traditional Easter. Usually they are a week or more apart. Here at the Roberdopoulos (that is the loving blend of Roberts and Papadopoulos that our friends the Maroney's gave us many years ago!) household will celebrate the traditions of both. The boys love it when they happen on the same day! Easter baskets and Greek food!


Greek Easter is not complete without tsoureki, the sweet bread. You know, when you have things only once a year they are so much more special. *Ü*


Orthodox Christians die their Easter eggs bright red. From ancient times, the egg has been a symbol of the renewal of life, and the message of the red eggs is victory over death. Tradition says that the Virgin Mother, Mary, dyed eggs this color to celebrated the Resurrection of Christ and to celebrate life. We make them all nice and shiny with olive oil.
Everyone gets a colored Easter egg after dinner. You tap each other's eggs until everyone's egg is cracked; the person whose egg cracks last is said to be destined to receive good fortune for the coming year.

  5. Happy Easter, to you my friend, & your gorgeous family! I grew up with a German family...Canadian Easter Sunday, chruch, German Easter to follow. Every celebration was the same; oh, to be a child again!

    Of course I have to ask for the bread recipe, also, lol.
    We make a traditional cookie with dried fruits on a shortbread crust, probably all that was left at the end of a long, hard winter.

  16. True to form, I also would love to have the bread recipe! Made my mouth water just to see the picture. I can almost smell that wonderful bread baking smell!!! My real question is HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET THOSE EGGS SO RED??? I use food coloring but they never get that dark. Those are way too beautiful to crack and eat! I would probably just dip them in varnish or something and keep them until the smell drove me insane!!

  18. Thanks for you blog post. You'd never guess, my Greek neighbour just came over and gave us a plate of Greek sweets and there, perched on top, were two red eggs! I of course, was able to share my vast knowledge on the tradition of the egg....big thanks to you as I only read your blog a few hours ago :)
